October 18: UU/Interfaith Sunday – They Walked This Way Before Us: Courageous Souls of Our Faith

Our religious tradition did not arrive here easily. Across the centuries, people questioned accepted truths, challenged religious authority, crossed boundaries, opened doors and sometimes paid dearly for doing so. Michael Servetus died for theological convictions. Thomas Potter prepared a chapel for a Universalist preacher he had not yet met. Olympia Brown carried her Universalist faith into the struggle for women’s equality. Sophia Lyon Fahs dared religious education to take children’s questions seriously. And they are only a few. This Sunday we will meet some of the courageous Unitarians, Universalists and Unitarian Universalists whose choices helped create the faith we have inherited. Not saints. Not superheroes. Human beings who were afraid, uncertain and imperfect—and nevertheless stepped forward. Their lives remind us: others have walked this road before us. We do not walk alone.
